Brauhaus zum Pfaffen – a place as Cologne once intended: house-brewed beer, honest brewery pub cuisine, and room for everyone who enjoys good company.

Take a seat in over 800 years of Cologne history
Those who sit in Brauhaus zum Pfaffen are served within over 800 years of history: The first foundation of the building was laid as early as 1176 on a small Rhine island – vaulted cellars and cisterns still bear witness to this today. After war damage, the Päffgen family took over the building in 1966, renovated it, and opened the brewery tap room Altstadt Päffgen in 1974.
It became known far beyond Cologne for its artistic touches, which have been preserved to this day.
Since 2026, Cologne restaurateur Jakob Liebner, together with his team, has been continuing the story of Brauhaus zum Pfaffen – with passion, dedication, and respect for its tradition. The historic charm of the building is preserved and carefully carried into the future.
Cologne has plenty of top-fermented beer, but only one Pfaffen Beer!
In a family-owned farmstead just outside Cologne, Maximilian Päffgen – grandson of Hermann Päffgen, founder of an old Cologne house brewery and the last brewmaster bearing the Päffgen name – brews his Pfaffen Beer according to his own recipe with a view of the Cologne Cathedral towers.
The finest ingredients and traditional brewing craftsmanship shine through in the taste of the beer. Refreshingly cold from the tap – a truly special pleasure. In Cologne, this is the only place serving Pfaffen beers fresh from the tap!
